Fraudsters Mimic EU Regulators During MiCA Overhaul, Watchdogs Warn

The sweeping overhaul of Europe's crypto licensing framework is becoming a hunting ground for fraudsters, according to multiple national regulators. With the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) forcing firms to reapply or transition their licenses, scammers are impersonating officials and legitimate exchanges to trick users into handing over credentials.
Impersonation tactics on the rise
Regulators across the EU have issued coordinated alerts about a surge in phishing emails, fake phone calls, and bogus websites that mimic official authorities. The scams often pressure users to verify their identity or “re-register” their accounts to comply with MiCA, leading to stolen funds or personal data.
Common red flags flagged by watchdogs include:
- Unsolicited requests for private keys or seed phrases, which legitimate regulators never ask for
- Threatening language with short deadlines to force rash decisions
- Fake websites that copy official domain names or use subtle spelling differences
“The licensing shakeout creates confusion, and fraudsters exploit that confusion ruthlessly,” said one anonymous EU official. “Always verify independently before sharing anything.”
Authorities advise users to contact their exchange through official support channels and to rely solely on the European Securities and Markets Authority’s list of registered firms. As MiCA continues to reshape the market, vigilance remains the first line of defense.
